One of the most common questions we’re asked is “How can I deer proof my yard”?
Although browsing deer may be charming to watch, they can cause extensive damage by feeding on plants and rubbing antlers against trees. Damage from browsing deer is most severe in winter when food is at a premium, and in early spring when new growth emerges from plants. It is difficult to move deer out of areas where they are not wanted. More practical management strategies include selecting plants that are unappealing to deer, treating plants with deer repellents, netting,
and fencing.
We also have natural and man-made repellants and netting that help keep deer away from your plants. The two types of deer repellents are contact repellents and area repellents. Contact repellents such as Deer Off® and Liquid Fence® are applied directly to plants, causing them to taste bad. Area repellents such as dried blood and milorganite, a fertilizer containing composted sludge, can be placed in a problem area and repel by their odor. Repellents are generally more effective on less preferred plants. Vary placing contact and area repellants so that deer do not become accustomed to certain tastes and scents. Netting can reduce deer damage to small trees, shrubs, and plants as deer cannot nibble on the vegetation.
Deer will eat any vegetation when hungry, but there are certain plants that are less susceptible to deer damage. Johnson’s has a large selection of trees, shrubs, and perennials that are deer “resistant”. Click here for a list of some “less susceptible” plants.
